The onion of matter and connectedness

Gracia Khouw explores the world around us through language: texts, word lists, and letters. To do so, she draws on the languages she grew up with—Dutch, English, and Indonesian.

Before language became her starting point,
her approach was rooted in painting itself, and especially in hard-edge painting or geometric abstraction. Painting taught her to question every medium: its precise nature, how it came into being, why it exists, and how it is perceived. This requires a reflective attitude and room for exploration. Over the years, the painting has taken on ever-changing forms. Indirectly, all this searching is an attempt to understand the relationship between events in reality and the painting as a microcosm. Layer by layer, moment by moment, the onion of matter and engagement is peeled away.

Khouw makes both autonomous works, such as paintings, giclées and animations, as well as projects designed specifically for certain locations. Architectural, social and historical elements are crucial to the design of her site-specific work.

Her work has been exhibited at Galerie de Zaal, Delft; Art Affairs, Amsterdam, Galerie Hein Elferink, Staphorst, Galerie Van den Berge, Goes among others.
In Situ works have been created at various locations, such as in Amsterdam Arti et Amicitiae, Huis de Pinto, OIS office, Municipality of Amsterdam ; Galerie Ursula Walter, Dresden; PHK 18/Convorm Architecten, Rotterdam; Openluchtmuseum De Lakenhal, Leiden; ACEC, Apeldoorn. She was recipient of ISCP program NY (USA) and Masereel Centrum Kasterlee (BE).

De ui van materie en betrokkenheid

Gracia Khouw

Haar werk was o.a. te zien in Galerie
de Zaal, Delft; Art Affairs, Amsterdam, Galerie Hein Elferink, Staphorst, Galerie Van den Berge, Goes.
In Situ werken vonden plaats op diverse locaties zoals in Amsterdam in
Arti et Amicitiae, Huis de Pinto, kantoor OIS, Gemeente Amsterdam; Galerie Ursula Walter, Dresden; PHK 18/Convorm Architecten, Rotterdam; Openluchtmuseum De Lakenhal, Leiden; ACEC, Apeldoorn. Ze nam deel aan residencies bij ISCP NY (VS) en Masereel Centrum, Kasterlee (BE).
