UNRAVEL Performance

Since antiquity, storytelling has been associated with the production and processing of textiles, probably because yarn spinning and weaving provided time for epically broad representation and reproduction of fact and fiction. As early as antiquity, the term narrative text was metaphorically derived from the Latin "texere" (to weave, weave together).

Relevant in this context, on the one hand, is the story handed down by Ovid about the shepherd's daughter Arachne, who challenged the goddess Athena to a competition in weaving. Because her weaving was better, the goddess tore it up in anger and turned Arachne into a spider. Since then, her offspring have hung by the thread and spun incessantly. There is also the myth of Ariadne, who helped Theseus find his way out of the dark labyrinth, by giving him a ball of wool to unwind, after he killed the Minotaur. Expressions like "the red thread" or "don't lose the thread" refer to these myths.

Like storytelling, singing is one of the original means of communication, dating back to the beginning of human history. With this in mind, Jane Brucker developed the concept for a performance in which she unravels her partner Jeremy Wasser's jumper while he is singing traditional songs.

Paul Goede - Séances

From his intensive study of various conceptual approaches of the 1970s and especially with the Japanese conceptual artists Yutaka Matsuzawa and On Kawara, he has developed his own conceptual kind of performances without action with the Mental Séances.

They are each dedicated to a color, a number and, in the meantime, above all, a letter. In developing the respective concept, the first step is to analyze and decondition a letter and the words associated with it. This process is in turn to be abstracted, spiritualized and psychically charged, in order to intonate it in the séance in highly condensed form as an ‘acoustic sculpture’ (high, low, quiet, loud, still, etc.), and to vary it in each case in atmospherically transmitted exchange with the audience. He is not least concerned with making it possible to experience what invisibly helps to shape things on a spiritual, psychological, cultural level. Thus the Mental Séances are ciphers in the sense of the philosopher and psychoanalyst Karl Jaspers, who saw their essential quality in conveying experiences of thought for something that cannot be materially grasped.

A Literature Performance by Timo Berndt - Poetry as sound, material and subtle play with language

From Dadaism to Concrete Poetry. Concrete Poetry uses the phonetic, visual and acoustic dimensions of language as a literary device. It represents itself.
With texts by Kurt Schwitters, Velemir Chlebnikow, Jorge Luis Borges, Ernst Jandl, Oskar Pastior, Eugen Gomringer, Gerhard Rühm, Franz Mon, Nora Gomringer and others. The performance takes place in the exhibition and refers to it. (60 - 70 min.)

Timo Berndt studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Hamburg. He was engaged at State Theatres in Kassel, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Darmstadt, at the Theatre National du Luxembourg and at the Schauspiel Bonn. He has presented literary programs written by himself in the context of art exhibitions and concerts, made Beethoven`s letters audible and carried out literary interventions in public space.

Sinds de oudheid wordt het vertellen van verhalen geassocieerd met de productie en verwerking van textiel, waarschijnlijk omdat het spinnen van garen en het weven tijd boden voor een episch brede weergave en reproductie van feiten en fictie. Al in de oudheid is de term verhalende tekst metaforisch afgeleid van het Latijnse "texere" (weven, samenweven).

Relevant in dit verband is enerzijds het door Ovidius overgeleverde verhaal over de herdersdochter Arachne, die de godin Athena uitdaagde tot een wedstrijd in weven. Omdat haar weefwerk beter was, verscheurde de godin het uit woede en veranderde Arachne in een spin. Sindsdien hangen haar nakomelingen aan de draad en spinnen onophoudelijk door. Daarnaast is er de mythe van Ariadne, die Theseus hielp de weg uit het donkere labyrint te vinden, door hem een bolletje wol te geven om het af te rollen, nadat hij de Minotaurus had gedood. Uitdrukkingen als "de rode draad" of "de draad niet verliezen" verwijzen naar deze mythen.

Net als verhalen vertellen is zang een van de oorspronkelijke communicatiemiddelen, die teruggaat tot het begin van de menselijke geschiedenis. Met dit in gedachten ontwikkelde Jane Brucker het concept voor een voorstelling waarin zij de trui van haar partner Jeremy Wasser ontrafelt terwijl hij traditionele liederen zingt.

Paul Goede - Séances

Vanuit zijn intensieve studie van verschillende conceptuele benaderingen uit de jaren 1970 en in het bijzonder van de Japanse conceptuele kunstenaars Yutaka Matsuzawa en On Kawara, heeft Paul Goede zijn eigen conceptuele vorm van séances ontwikkeld. Ze zijn elk gewijd aan een kleur, een nummer en ondertussen vooral een letter.

Bij het ontwikkelen van het respectievelijke concept is de eerste stap… een letter en de daarmee verbonden woorden te analyseren en te deconditioneren. Dit proces wordt op zijn beurt geabstraheerd, vergeestelijkt en psychisch geladen, om het in de séance in sterk gecondenseerde vorm te intoneren. Een gecondenseerde vorm als een ‘akoestische sculptuur'(hoog, laag, stil, luid, stil, enz.), en het telkens te variëren in atmosferisch overgebrachte uitwisseling met het publiek.

Het gaat hem er niet in de laatste plaats om de ervaring mogelijk te maken van wat onzichtbaar helpt de dingen vorm te geven op geestelijk, psychologisch en cultureel niveau. Zo zijn de Mental Séances cijfers in de zin van de… filosoof en psychoanalyticus Karl Jaspers, die hun essentiële kwaliteit zag in het overbrengen van ervaringen…van gedachten voor iets dat niet materieel kan worden begrepen.

Een Literatuurperformance door Timo Berndt - Poëzie als klank, materiaal en subtiel spel met taal.

Van dadaïsme tot concrete poëzie. Concrete Poetry gebruikt de fonetische, visuele en akoestische aspecten van taal als literair middel. Het representeert zichzelf.
Met teksten van Kurt Schwitters, Velemir Chlebnikow, Jorge Luis Borges, Ernst Jandl, Oskar Pastior, Eugen Gomringer, Gerhard Rühm, Franz Mon, Nora Gomringer en anderen. De performance vindt plaats in de tentoonstelling en verwijst ernaar. (60 - 70 min.)

Timo Berndt studeerde aan de Universiteit voor Muziek en Podiumkunsten in Hamburg. Hij was verbonden aan Staatstheaters in Kassel, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Darmstadt, aan het Theatre National du Luxembourg en aan het Schauspiel Bonn. Hij presenteerde zelfgeschreven literaire programma's in het kader van kunsttentoonstellingen en concerten, maakte de brieven van Beethoven hoorbaar en voerde literaire interventies uit in de openbare ruimte.
