TWAALF/TWELVE

The number twelve carries religious symbolism, generally representing perfection, entirety or cosmic order in traditions since antiquity.

The number indicates perfection and completeness. There are 12 hours, 12 months; the Bible talks about the 12 tribes and 12 disciples and 12 precious stones, among other things. Words such as: Adamskostuum (birthday suit), moederschoot (mother's lap), donderwolken (thunder clouds). They’re words that you would think have existed in the Dutch language for 400 years. Words that describes the Calvinistic character, such as; onderwerping (submission), schotschrift (pamphlet), muggenziften (to nitpick). Other words of the selection: knikkebollen (to nod, dozed off), oorverdovend (deafening, earsplitting), versjacheren (to squander), dwingelandij (tyranny), oneindigheid (infinity).
