ZO OUD ALS DE WEG ( ZOADW), 2009

Public artwork comissioned by the Municipality of Heemskerk and Beverwijk / Location: Broekpolder, at the intersection between 'Laan van Archeologie' and 'Tacitus' / Mural, 268 x 252 x 277 cm, wallpaint on concrete / Completion 2009

This site-specific artwork 'ZO OUD ALS DE WEG' is a mural on the 4 outer walls of a KPN broadband distribution centre. The title is an old Dutch expression meaning 'as old as the hills' or as 'old as Methusalem'. The little building is located at a busy intersection where cars, bikers and pedastrians of all ages cross paths. Which is why I got the idea to gather phrases about roads. Residents of the Broekpolder area were invited to send in Dutch phrases containing the word 'de weg', meaning 'road'. More than 100 phrases and expressions were submitted for the artwork.

+ Many thanks to Hans Blomvliet, Ton Talmon, Ellen Palsgraaf, Sanne Bruggink/Het Plot, Jan Samsom, Nanon Soeters, Joke Ruys, Gemeente Heemskerk/Beverwijk, residents of Broekpolder who responded to my call for Dutch phrases and KPN.
