Amsterdam - For the reading room of Huis de Pinto, I’ll be making a text image on the wall that will grow over the course of the weeks. The texts are excerpts from conversations I’ll collect with people who have a warm heart for Huis de Pinto. The basis for the conversations is a quote from the book Dove mi trovo (Where I am now) by Jhumpa Lahiri.
A question in the book intrigues me : is there a place we are not passing through? It formulates a connection between language, place and personal history. Is the HdP a sheltered place where you are not passing through and make contact with others? And at present another relevant question is: what does an HdP mean as a meeting place in Corona time?
Quote: ... Is there a place where we are not in transit? Disoriented, perplexed, confused, lost, stunned, dazed, defeated, bewildered, lost: I feel at home in that family of terms. So that is my place, the words that bring me into the world.
Huis de Pinto was originally built in 1605 and is named after a leading Amsterdam family dynasty of Portuguese-Jewish merchant bankers. Now it functions as a lively meeting place with a varied cultural program for residents and lovers of books and music.

Voor de leeszaal van Huis de Pinto maakt Gracia Khouw een tekstbeeld op de wand dat in de loop van de weken zal groeien. De teksten zijn fragmenten uit gesprekken die ze zal voeren met mensen die Huis de Pinto een warm hart toedragen. Aanleiding voor de gesprekken is een citaat uit het boek DOVE MI TROVO (Waar ik nu ben) van Jhumpa Lahiri.
De vraag: bestaat er een plek waar we niet op doorreis zijn? intrigeert mij omdat het een verbinding formuleert tussen taal, plaats en persoonlijke geschiedenis. Is de HdP een beschutte plek waar je even niet op doorreis bent en contact maakt met anderen? En actueel is ook de vraag: wat betekent een HdP als ontmoetingsplek in Corona tijd?

… Bestaat er een plek waar we niet op doorreis zijn? Gedesoriënteerd, beduusd, verward, verloren, verdwaasd, verbijsterd, versuft, verslagen, verbouwereerd, verdwaald: in die familie van termen voel ik me thuis. Dat is dus mijn plek, de woorden die me op de wereld zetten.
Huis de Pinto werd oorspronkelijk gebouwd in 1605 en is vernoemd naar een toonaangevende Amsterdamse familiedynastie of Portugees-Joodse koopvaardijbankiers. Nu functioneert het als een levendige ontmoetingsplaats met een gevarieerd cultureel programma voor bewoners en liefhebbers van boeken en muziek.
Het boek ‘Waar ik nu ben’ van Jhumpa Lahiri vormt het startpunt van mijn gesprekken met lezers die Huis de Pinto een warm hart toedragen.
